Do you leave your magic at the door?
It’s that time to go back to school, to begin or return to college, university or other training. Do you leave your paganism at the door when you leave home, or do you carry it with you? There are some ways to bring your beliefs on board that actually support a student’s journey, they aren’t blatant in your face ideas, no one will know about your helpers. It’s sweet to want to give children magical gifts, just remember if a child is not your own, ask the legal parent/guardian first. Now, for the rest of us who are at school, jobs, living life and being on this blue marble, these are my thoughts on blending pagan culture with the everyday world.
I think it’s perfectly acceptable to ask a god/goddess to be your education coach/metaphysical manager/career monger for the school year, calendar year, this season’s work etc. Look for a deity who has associations with your field of study or work. For example if I was studying to become a historian or it was my job, I would consider the Slavic goddess Saga, Lady of wisdom and history, she could be a great ally. Of course you need to do research, learn about the pantheon, symbols, favored offerings, associations with other gods and humanity, any blessings and challenges the god/dess is likely to bestow and why. The gods are very real! When you find the right deity there is a sense of alignment and don’t be surprised if the gods begin appearing to you through symbols, words, bits of conversation, the radio etc. or even literally hearing their name! Remember when you involve deity you are making a contract, approach the gods like you would a mentor, with respect and reverence, keep a record of what blessings you ask for and what actions you promise to take.
Consider creating a talisman for work or school, there are a multitude of symbols used from ancient times to today, and a lot of lore around using the symbols. A talisman can be as simple as images drawn on a slip of paper carried in your pocket during an exam or as elaborate as you like. Some students craft an energy mascot from wood, clay, or stone and paint or carve the symbols, the talisman is dedicated to aid throughout the term or in some cases a person’s entire schooling or career. If you can’t find any symbols that work for your purposes, it’s okay to create your own or mingle others to become what you need.
Working with astrological influences is helpful, each day is associated with a planet and energy that can make it a more favorable time for certain tasks. For example, if I needed to do a physically demanding task I would consider a Tuesday, because the Mars energy would help me. The very basics of Astro energy is: Sunday-sun, Monday-moon, Tuesday-Mars, Wednesday-Mercury, Thursday-Jupiter, Friday-Venus and Saturday-Saturn.
The stone, crystal and gem world can also help us, carry a stone with you, or wear jewelry made with it, some folks even tape stones to their body over a specific area to influence chakra energy and body meridians. There are some gems associated with helping our intellectual side, the most common are: aventurine, fluorite, malachite, marble, and zircon, amber is really great because it provides protection and attracts success to the person wearing or carrying it.
Plants are natural medicine, when you feel stressed the easiest way to unwind is through a cup of tea; look for blends with chamomile, lavender, hibiscus and passionflower, the four cornerstones of relaxation. If you have sleeping issues make a lavender sachet and tuck it under your pillow, it’s believed to bring happy dreams too! Essential oils are concentrated plant essences, they may be added to lotions, made into sprays, used in room diffusers or add a couple drops to a cotton ball and inhale. Some oils that help concentration are: eucalyptus, lemon, orange, thyme, cypress, rosemary, peppermint and clove and if you need to jog your memory for a test, ginger, sage, thyme, rosemary, juniper and clove are thought to help open those synapses!
Energy work is something many of us forget when experiencing stress, and it’s one of the easiest most effective things we can do to help ourselves. Whenever you feel overwhelmed just connect with the earth, release your worries down through your feet into the earth, mama will take care of them, bring her stability up through your legs into your core and let it flow out your head and over you like a fountain. Bring the cosmic energy through your crown and let it flow down and through you, then up and around the outside of your body to recharge. You can also visualize a bubble of energy that envelops you from above your head to below your feet and travels freely wherever you go, white is a good multipurpose colour, blue, gold, purple and violet are popular too.
Words are magic, affirmations are powerful write them out and place in visible areas, mantras are mighty, adopt one or form your own, speak it out! “Effect phrases” are words that cause action, like saying “armour up” to create an instant energy shield. Words mold energy, make a phrase about your intent and repeat it often. Of course, free flow writing and journaling are ways to express, clarify and sort through your thoughts and feelings and are great outlets as well.
You might want to try some, all or none of these practises, it’s up to you. As always I do remind that all is done in the spirit of harming none, it’s not cool to create tools to manipulate or impose your will on any other being. Most pagan traditions are about co operating with the forces of nature, the laws of the universe and creating a more positive outcome, for all involved. Enjoy your journey and get to know your allies!
