A Minimalist Birth

March 9, 2012 in Minimalism

Apologies for the lateness of this post and the lack of last post!

As you can guess from the above title, there has been a new arrival in this Pagan Household! His name is Rowan. He was overdue, and then came quickly, unfortunately, I was not present for the birth, as I had just gone to de-ice the car for the trip to the hospital, and came back in the door to find him in my partner’s arms!

So, for the past month, I have been guilty of spending the time that I usually use on posts to rocking him and generally just being proud dad!

We have invested in some Real Nappies! Washable, re-usable nappies that you can put a flushable paper liner in. He has some made of bamboo fibre which are really fluffy and absorbent, and some that  are micro-fibre which dry quickly. These are obviously a much better choice from an environmental (and therefore Minimalist) point of view, and just feel nicer when you pick him up in them. A disposable nappy takes a VERY long time to break down in landfill. I don’t know what the Real Nappy situation is in The US, but I would be interested in hearing.

I have also found, for the other children in the house, some stainless-steel drinking bottles. Plastic bottles leak poisons into the fluid they contain over quite a quick period of time when exposed to light. Some of the stainless-steel bottles I have found are part of a scheme in the UK (and The Netherlands), where if you present it in certain shops and cafes, they will fill it free of charge with tap water. This may not seem like much, but when you have a few children in tow, buying drinks add up to a fair amount on trips out. I would also be interested if such a scheme exists in The US.

These are a few ways that families can help with cutting down on environmental wastes.

Blessings and Namaste.
